Gage Basey-USA Beach U-19 National Team Member

Gage Basey and partner Caleb Kwekel (Florida) earned a second place finish at the U-19 FIVB World Championship Trials in Huntington Beach, CA at the end of June.  This finish placed them on the USA Beach U-19 National team with four other players.  The pair are hoping that their second place finish will earn them a spot at the World Championships in Roi Et Thailand in December (the competition was recently postponed due to Covid).  They recently attended a training session in Fort Lauderdale, FL to help them prepare.

Our Nationals volleyball experience in Florida was a blast! We learned a lot as a team, and really worked on court awareness while playing against some tough teams. We were so fortunate to have Coach Jason as our coach while we were there! We really enjoyed the location of the tournament. The beach and courts were great. It was within walking distance to all the shops and dining along Sea Breeze Boulevard so we did some shopping and ate some great food.

Some highlights for me from USAV Beach Nationals was getting to semifinals in the silver bracket. My partner and I were both super pleased with that outcome seeing it was our first national tournament and the playing conditions are very different from that of Colorado. Another highlight was getting to play on the beach right next to the water, definitely a first time for me. But with that came the challenge of adapting to the wind blowing from the ocean. Usually my partner and I are so used to the wind taking things long or making the ball drop short, but in Florida it was much different scenario. Instead of watching the backline we had to keep our eyes on the sidelines to watch the ball creep back in or blow slightly out. Nonetheless it was a great lesson and taught us how to use the wind to our advantage, overall making us better players. Lastly one fun thing we did while there. While the whole trip had loads of enjoyment, my favorite part was swimming at our pool and then heading down to the ocean to boogie board with my partner and one of our coaches. That's definitely not something we get to do much living in Colorado. All and all, I am so thankful to have gotten the opportunity to play my favorite sport in such a cool and different area. I can't wait to get back out on the sand next year and apply what we learned from the trip.
